Unique Races

The Colesberg fanciers invented a unique racing program in 2006. It is based on a German program of 14 consecutive races, but with one difference; the Colesberg program has no fixed release points but fixed distances. The aim is to race all birds in 14 consecutive headwind races. Race direction is determined by the predicted weather forecast on race day. If a southern wind is predicted then they race from the north; western wind then the race will be from the east; northern wind then the race will be from the south, etc.

The result is quality races in headwinds with velocities around 1150mpm; so ideal conditions for selection. Pigeons able to complete the 14 race program will fly approximately 5400km in one season. This unique racing program enables members to select consistent pigeons that are able to stay in form for a long period.

Another unique feature of the Colesberg system is that there are no restrictions on the number of birds fanciers can enter. In South Africa all other clubs have entry restrictions and in most clubs members can enter only twenty pigeons in a race.

The champion fancier on the Colesberg system is determined by the total points of his five best ace pigeons (33% prizes per race) at the end of the year. This enables the fancier with a small number of birds to compete against the fanciers entering many birds in races.
